WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - You may drive down Market Street in Wilmington on a regular basis and have no idea that this street is a hotbed of criminal activity. The problem has become so bad that 6 of the motels in the area got letters from the District Attorney in December. The message? Clean up your business or get shut down.
Prostitution, narcotics trafficking, and domestic violence are just a few of the crimes that are taking place on a daily basis in and around these motels.
A deadly shooting at The Carolinian Inn was the last straw for law enforcement who regularly get called to this area. In fact, the sheer number of times police have had to respond to some of the Market Street hotels is downright shocking. In the past 5 years, the police have been called to one of the motels almost 1,500 times. The numbers for the other motels in the area are very similar.
We'll reveal the true depth of the crimes that are taking place at these business on a regular basis and talk to officials to find out what is being done to combat such a huge issue on Thursday night at 11:00 PM on WECT.
