UNCW police determine a reported assault did not happen on campus

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - University of North Carolina Wilmington police concluded Thursday that an assault reported Feb. 11 did not take place on UNCW's campus.

In a statement to students, faculty and staff:

The UNCW Police Department has concluded its investigation into the assault that was reported on the evening of Thursday, February 11. Based on evidence gathered during the investigation, UPD has determined that this incident, as reported, did not occur on our campus.

A female student reported she was assaulted around 8:30 p.m. in the H parking lot across from the water tower on campus.

The victim reported that three males wearing dark clothing and ski masks came out of the bushes and attacked her. She was hit on the head with a pipe, leaving a cut above her eyebrow.

UNCW Police issued an email alert to students, faculty and staff after the incident. University police asked for community tips following the report.

"We're asking our community to help identify the people who were involved," Major Chris Bertram with the UNCW Police Department said after the reported incident.

Bertram said aggravated assaults happen once or twice a year on campus. He also said false reports, as in this case, are rare.
