WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Dockside Restaurant is now proposing an expansion of its parking lot.
This expansion would include extending the current parking lot across the street, stretching to the west side of Airlie Road.
Three patio homes on the west side of Airlie Road would also be constructed.
Residents say that Airlie Road has a great deal of history, and they do not want to see it commercialized.
"When we moved to this neighborhood, we relied on the city staff to keep our neighborhood's character," said Haywood Newkirk. "We also relied on them to protect the residents."
According to the Wrightsville Sound Small Area Plan, which was adopted in July 2011 by the City of Wilmington, there can currently be no commercial developments on the west side of Airlie Road.
The small area plan also states that no increased residential density on the west side of Airlie Road is permitted either.
The City of Wilmington denied a request for Dockside to expand last year, but this year, the restaurant is trying again.
Dockside made the proposal to the City of Wilmington's planning board, and it passed with a 6-1 vote.
