WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Dozens of people came together over good food for the YWCA’s first Potluck for Peace Thursday.

A speaker led the group through diversity exercises, like treating people differently based on a number on an assigned playing card.

The event was a joint effort between the MLK committee and Wilmington’s YWCA.

“I think what this event is going to allow people to do is get to a point where the fear factor is out,” Kimberly McLaughlin-Smith, UNCW diversity and inclusion specialist, said. “I think the fear of the unknown is what keeps us apart. So my role here tonight is to get people to realize yes we are different, but the similarities are more valuable.”

Event organizers said the community needs a positive message, especially after recent violence.

“In hopes that we can start a conversation about race and continue the conversation, and hope that whatever difficulties or hang ups we’ve had with race relations we can address and move forward in a positive way,” Evelyn Bryant, YWCA board member and MLK committee member, said. “Hopefully it will inspire our youth in order to stop the violence that’s going on at this particular time.”

Bryant hopes the Potluck for Peace will become an annual event.
