WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Expect some delays starting Monday if you typically use Kerr Avenue to get around town. No detours have been proposed at this time, but some lane closures will be necessary.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation has awarded a $22 million contract to bring some major safety improvements to a 1.5 mile section of Kerr Avenue, between MLK and Randall parkways.
Crews are expected to widen the road to four lanes, add bike lanes, sidewalks and a landscaped median. The City of Wilmington will contribute to the cost of adding bike lanes and sidewalks.
Additionally, traffic signals will be added to the following intersections:
- Kerr Avenue and Cinema Drive
- Market Street and Cinema Drive
- Kerr Avenue and New Centre Drive/Sunglow Drive
- Market Street and Wilmington Avenue
- Kerr Avenue and Birchwood Drive
Construction on the project should wrap up by September 2018.
