UNCW Press Release

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Led by senior forward Colin Bonner and freshman midfielder Ben Fisher, UNCW features four players on the 2015 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) All-State Men’s Soccer Team.

Bonner and Fisher were named to the All-State First-Team while senior defender Michael Mecham and senior midfielder Jose Garcia earned spots on the All-State Second-Team. The four All-State selections ranked third among the schools honored.

“I am delighted for our players who received this award, especially our three seniors along with freshman Ben Fisher, as they all had consistently high performances this season,” Coach Aidan Heaney said. “In a state that is as soccer rich as ours, there are a lot of outstanding players so it is an excellent recognition for them and the rest of our team.”

A three-time All-State selection, Bonner was the Seahawks’ leading scorer with 20 points as a senior, scoring seven goals with six assists. The All-Colonial Athletic Association First-Team selection was tied for third in the CAA in goals and points and earned CAA Co-Player of the Week honors after scoring three goals in a 5-1 win over North Florida on Sept. 4. In addition, the Fulton, Md., native became the first men’s soccer player in UNCW history to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America® First-Team distinction and was a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award.

Fisher, who earned Second-Team All-CAA notice, was named as the league’s Co-Rookie of the Year after tallying six goals with five assists. A native of Chapel Hill, N.C., he started 18-of-19 games during his rookie campaign and was honored as the CAA’s Rookie of the Week following a two-goal effort in the Seahawks’ 5-0 victory over South Carolina.

A Second-Team All-CAA selection, Mecham started 17 games for the Seahawks as a senior and led a defensive unit which ranked second in the CAA in goals allowed (23). The Blacksburg, Va., product was a four-year starter for the Seahawks who tallied three assists in his career while starting 67-of-71 games.

Garcia, who started 18-of-19 games for the Seahawks during his senior campaign, was also a Second-Team All-CAA performer in the midfield and contributed four assists. A native of College Park, Ga., he finished his career with nine assists while starting 48-of-68 games.

The Seahawks finished the season with an 8-8-3 record and advanced to the CAA quarterfinals.

Nominations for the NCCSIA All-State Men’s Soccer Teams were submitted by North Carolina sports information professionals and voted on by NCCSIA members.
