HEMPSTEAD, New York – Senior forward Katie Johnston scored the game’s lone goal less than two minutes into the second half as William & Mary edged UNCW, 1-0, in the first semifinal at the Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Soccer Championship at Hofstra Soccer Stadium on Friday night.
The second-seeded Tribe, which improves to 14-3-2 on the season, advance to the championship game against either top-seeded Hofstra or fourth-seeded James Madison on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Seahawks, who were the No. 3 seed in the tournament, had a four-game win streak snapped while falling to 14-6-1.
After a scoreless first half, Johnston gave William & Mary a one-goal edge when she headed in a corner kick from senior midfielder Nicole Baxter just 75 seconds into the second half.
The Seahawks had several good chances to even the score in the second half, but were unable to score the tying goal.
Senior goalkeeper Caroline Casey, the CAA Defensive Player of the Year, made two saves to earn her CAA-leading 10th shutout of the season for the Tribe. Junior goalkeeper Carolyn Huddy, who earned third team All-CAA notice, notched three saves in the loss.
William & Mary outshot UNCW by a 13-7 margin and held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
• William & Mary and UNCW met for the 24th time in the all-time series. The Tribe holds a 23-1-0 advantage after Friday’s win and has earned three consecutive victories in the series.
• The CAA’s leading offense with 48 goals, UNCW was shut out for just the third time this season. Two of the three shutouts have come against William & Mary.
• UNCW is now 6-13-3 all-time in the CAA Tournament, including a 1-4-1 mark in the semifinals.
• The Seahawks failed to record 10 shots for just the fifth time this year.
