WHITEVILLE, NC (WECT) - Columbus County Commissioners unanimously approved an approximately $56,000 plan to improve security at the health department.
The request came after two recent incidents in which health department patients became hostile toward staff.
Health Director Kim Smith presented a plan to commissioners earlier this month that includes installing panic buttons throughout the building and protective glass at the front counter.
The Columbus County Commissioners agreed on hiring an armed security guard instead of a deputy at their meeting Monday, November 16.
The move to hire an armed security guard instead of a sheriff's deputy will save over $14,000 a year.
