The Laney football team beat Topsail 31-0, but it was the brawl that broke out that has people talking.
In the 3rd quarter, Laney was driving when after the whistle had blown, quarterback Travone Green was body slammed to the ground. Tempers flared and a fight began. Coaches, officials and school administrators rushed the field trying to break things up.
"One of our kids was tackled by one of the Topsail kids, and then our player went in to defend him, and then all the chaos proceeded from there," explained Fred Lynch, Laney Athletic Director.
The game was delayed several minutes, before officials could take control of the melee. At least one player from both teams was ejected.
The game did continue after the fight broke out.
"What we do as coaches is to number one, make sure no one else joins the party, so we kept our side under control," said Topsail Head Coach Wayne Inman.
Topsail plans to reprimand their players per the state rules. According to the state rule book, any team that has three or more individuals ejected for fighting in a single game are not eligible for the playoffs. Fighting is grounds for an ejection followed by two missed games.
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association plans to review footage from both teams, to determine any disciplinary action.
