WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Parents from one New Hanover County school are upset they were not notified after a student was caught with a gun at school

According to the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, a student from Williston Middle School was taken into custody after teachers found her with a gun Thursday morning.

Deputies confronted the student, who handed over the backpack, and discovered a loaded 9mm Ruger handgun.

Many are asking why they the school was not placed on lock down and parents were not sent information about the incident.

Williston parent Jaime Burcham said she heard about it on the newscasts when she got home and is unacceptable that she didn't hear from the school about it.

"A situation as serious as a loaded gun found in my child's school, the parents should be let known of this. We need to be able to sit our kids down and put their fears aside and come together and make sure this doesn't happen again and without a phone call even letting us know what happened we can't do any of that," Burcham said.

Deputy Superintendent Dr. Rick Holliday said the reason why they did not release more information because they must abide by the laws due to the student being a minor and the investigation being ongoing.

There was no need to notify because there was no threat the danger was over very quickly and we certainly want our parents to know understand our parents frustration, but at the same time the fact that we are still dealing with a juvenile and we are still dealing with law enforcement," Holliday said.

Holliday said there is a letter being sent home to parents and guardians about the incident Thursday and how they handled the situation,
