Three New Hanover County schools were on lockdown Thursday morning after a call reporting a kid with a gun in Ashley High School’s parking lot, according to Lt. Brewer with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office. He also said officials received a second call from a parent reporting someone got on a school bus with a gun.
"I'm calling to let you know there's someone walking around Ashley High School with a gun. You need to get out here quick, please," a woman told 911 operators.
Brewer said deputies cleared Ashley High, Murray Middle and Anderson Elementary schools, and all the school buses after receiving the reports. No arrests have been made, but deputies are following up on several leads.
According to New Hanover County Dispatch, the three schools were placed on lockdown around 7:50 a.m. It was lifted approximately 40 minutes later.
A spokesperson for New Hanover County Schools said extra security will remain on campus as a security precaution, but the schools are returning to normal operation.
