WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - It's out with the old and in with the new for Hoggard High's new baseball facility. A backhoe knocked down the 40-year-old press box, concession stands and fencing to make way for a new, state-of-the-art building and backstop.
The demolition is the first step in constructing their "Field of Dreams," which coach Thomas Bowker hopes will help their team to victory.
"The tradition here is that we want to win championships every year and we feel like we want our facilities to reflect that," Bowker said.
According to coach, 15 to 20 thousand dollars worth of construction materials were donated to the project, and the team parents are to thank for that.
"They jumped on board with us and they did a phenomenal job," Bowker said. "They went out and knocked on doors, they raised money, did fundraisers, we worked concession stands—they did the brunt of the work."
Coach Bowker said the construction is expected to wrap up before baseball season this spring.
