UNCW Press Release
NORFOLK, Virginia – Led by a pair of first half goals by junior Kennedy Ulrich (Lloydminster, Alberta, Canada) and senior Stephanie Bronson (Leesville H.S./Raleigh, N.C.), UNCW (1-2-0) got out to an early two-goal lead and held off a late charge by Old Dominion (1-2-0) to earn a 2-1 non-conference victory over the Lady Monarchs at the ODU Soccer Complex on Thursday evening.
"Tonight was like a [Colonial Athletic Association] game," Coach Paul Cairney said. "Both teams went after it and created chances. ODU is a very well-coached team with both athleticism and strength. They made it very difficult to break them down.
"The early goal was so crucial for us tonight," Cairney added. "Now, we have another game on Sunday, so we will get back on the field tomorrow and get ready for another top 25 team."
Ulrich gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute when she converted a crossing pass from junior midfielder Moa Jarl (Gothenburg, Sweden) with a quick shot in the right side of the goal.
In the 25th minute, UNCW upped its advantage to 2-0 when Bronson took advantage of a turnover by the Lady Monarchs and scored an unassisted marker into the left side of the goal.
Old Dominion trimmed the margin to 2-1 with 16:01 remaining in regulation when freshman forward Iris Achterhof (Groningen, Netherlands) scored off an assist from sophomore forward Madison Hogan (Gloucester Catholic H.S./Williamstown, N.J.).
From there, the Seahawk defense held Old Dominion to just two shots to secure the victory.
Junior goalkeeper Carolyn Huddy (Lake Norman H.S./Huntersville, N.C.) made three saves for the Seahawks while junior Erin Kinz (Lewiston Porter H.S./Niagara Falls, N.Y.) tallied four saves in the loss for Old Dominion.
