Laney grad dismissed from ECU football program

GREENVILLE, NC (WECT) - A Laney High School graduate has been dismissed from the East Carolina University football program following team rule violations.

Sophomore Larry Williams was an offensive lineman for the Pirates.

Head Football Coach Ruffin McNeill made the announcement Tuesday. The details of those violations was not released.

"It is always disappointing when someone is dismissed from the program, but there comes a time when an individual's actions force the loss of a privilege, which in this case is being a part of our team," McNeill said in a news release. "We all have the responsibility of being accountable."

ECU officials said Williams played in all 13 games as primarily a special teams contributor during his redshirt freshman campaign in 2014.

According to his bio on the ECU Pirates website, Williams totaled 56 tackles, including 33 solo hits, one sack and two fumble recoveries as a senior team captain at Laney High School. He helped the Buccaneers to a 5-5 regular season record and an appearance in the NCHSAA 4AA playoffs.
