WILMINGTON (UNCW) -

A new month, a new sport at UNCW.

The Athletic Department officially announced the addition of Women's Beach Volleyball to the portfolio. The team becomes the 19th in the department and the first women's program added since 1994.

UNCW becomes the first NCAA Division 1 institution to offer the sport in the State of North Carolina.

Beach volleyball was approved as an NCAA Championship sport late last year and will hold its first national championship next spring.

"Beach volleyball becomes more and more popular each year and we think it will be a big hit here," said Jimmy Bass via a news release by the university.

Amy Bambenek, who is the indoor head coach, will coach the sand team. David Fischer has been added as an assistant coach after three seasons as the head coach of the sand program at Louisiana Monroe.

The 2016 schedule and home site will be announced at a later date.
