Tuition freeze at UNC schools

FEBRUARY 11, 2005 -- A committee of the University of North Carolina Board of Governors has turned down appeals from 14 UNC schools that want to increase in-state tuition.

One committee member says, if the schools keep raising tuition, they risk cutting off the students' access to education. Ben Ruffin says he'd rather see the General Assembly increase its funding for state universities.

The committee voted to freeze tuition for in-state undergraduates but deferred action on out-of-state tuition, graduate tuition and fees until next month.
