NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - An area on U.S. 421 near the I-140 exit required nose plugs early Friday.

New Hanover County Sheriff's deputies and crews with the N.C. Department of Transportation responded to reports of a large amount of trash in the road between the county dump and the Isabel Holmes Bridge.

Law enforcement initially directed traffic around the mess as crews cleared the scene. The road has since been reopened.

Deputies say it appears the trash fell out of the back of a garbage truck, but are continuing to investigate.

Officials also received a similar report of garbage in the middle of Dawson Street between Third Street and Fifth Avenue. They are working to determine if the two incidents are connected.
