NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Buckle up, drivers! More than 100 people were cited for seatbelt violations Wednesday as part of a Click it or Ticket campaign in New Hanover County. The enforcement was a collaboration between the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office and the Wilmington Police Department.
According to the sheriff's office, a total of 111 seatbelt violations were issued at two locations: Market Street and Marsh Oaks Drive; and Carolina Beach Road at Northern Boulevard. According to officials with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, one person was even cited and stopped for not wearing a seatbelt in both locations.
"It was a significant number," Lt. Jerry Brewer with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office said. "It is obvious that a lot of people are not wearing their seatbelts. These [operations] were for short amount of times, these were not and all day long events. It was a matter of a couple of hours at each location in which it was constant, there were times when we are seeing additional violations but didn't have deputies and officers to pull them over because they were already pulled over with others."
He said seatbelt violations have always been an issue, however, the high number of recent citations in such a short period of time illustrates the violation is still a serious issue and continued enforcement is needed.
"There is definitely not a trend to say that this age group was not wearing a seatbelt, it was across the board," Lt. Brewer said.
In all a total of 151 charges and five written warnings were issued throughout the day, including:
2- Child Restraint Violations
2- Helmet law violations
4- Driving During Revocation
6- No Operator's License/ Other License Violations
8- Expired Registration Violations
4- Safety Inspection Violations
