Rapid Admit Unit should improve emergency care

FEBRUARY 8, 2005 -- When you have to go to the emergency room, you hope the visit is quick. Now patients at New Hanover Regional Medical Center will start receiving care even before their beds are ready.

Starting Monday, patients will make their first stop in the Rapid Admit Unit. It's a nine-bed area staffed with nurses and clerks who will administer treatments and tests that may otherwise take hours to complete.

The unit is expected to shorten the stay of some patients by about half a day.
