BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Troopers have upgraded the charges for Charles Harvey Lee, 45, the driver of the at-fault vehicle involved in a crash in Brunswick County that killed two and injured several others Friday night.
According to Sgt. P.M. Sanders with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Lee was initially charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, but his charges have since been upgraded to two counts of felony death by motor vehicle.
The two-vehicle crash occurred on N.C. 130 at Longwood Road in the Ash community in Brunswick County around 10 p.m.
Lee reportedly failed to stop at a stop sign on Longwood Road and ran into another vehicle traveling on N.C. 130.
One passenger from each vehicle died as a result of the crash.
John Watson Williams, 59, of Southport, was a rear passenger in the at-fault vehicle. Williams died in the accident, according to Sanders.
Helen Bare, 82, of Liberty, NC, was a rear passenger in the other vehicle. She also died as a result of the crash according to Sanders.
Another passenger in the at-fault vehicle was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center. An unknown number of other occupants were transported to Novant-Brunswick Hospital and Grand Strand Hospital. Sanders said three people were riding in each vehicle involved in the accident.
Sanders said alcohol could have been a factor in the crash, and the incident is still under investigation.
