COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WECT) -
A teacher assistant at a Columbus County middle school has been suspended after being arrested for his involvement in a fight on school property.
According to Major Bobby Worley with the Columbus County Sheriff's Office, 30-year-old Joseph Thompson, a teacher assistant at Nakina Middle School, overheard a 14-year-old white student call a 15-year-old black student a racial slur.
Thompson then overheard another student bet the black student that he wouldn't punch the white student. Worley said Thompson also bet $10 that the black student wouldn't do it.
According to Worley, the black student did punch the white student. The incident occurred in a hallway on school property.
The black student was arrested and charged with assault. Thompson was arrested and charged with aiding and abetting the assault and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
According to Kelly Jones, spokesperson for Columbus County Schools, Thompson has been placed on unpaid suspension.
