Pender Co. man charged after allegedly yelling at kids, assaulting a deputy, destroying police property

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - A Pender County man was arrested on several charges after a bizarre incident in Hampstead last Thursday.

According to Pender County Sheriff Carson Smith, deputies responded to Sloop Point Road in reference to a suspect yelling at kids as they were getting off the bus.

When deputies arrived, the suspect, 58-year-old Horace Ray Medlin, had walked down the road to Hilltop Grocery Store. The store owner told deputies that Medlin was not allowed to enter the building while intoxicated after an incident the previous day.

According to Smith, Medlin punched a deputy in the head and spit on the officer who was trying to arrest him in connection to trespassing charges.

Medlin continued spitting on the deputy while being transported to the Pender County Jail.

After arriving at the jail, Medlin damaged a printer and a camera in the magistrates office. According to arrest warrants, damage to the equipment was in excess of $200.

Medlin was charged with assault on a government official, second-degree trespass and injury to real property. He was given a $1,000 bond.
