JANUARY 18, 2005-- A Boiling Spring Lakes Police Officer was shot and killed while making a traffic stop early Tuesday morning.
Officer Mitch Prince pulled over Darrell Maness on Highway 87 in Brunswick County. Maness was wanted for a parole violation for a drug charge in Alamance County.
According to Brunswick County Sheriff Ron Hewett, Prince and Maness struggled and Officer Prince was shot several times with his own gun. The suspect then ran from the scene. Police tracked him down at a trailer park near the Port Motel. There was a shootout and law enforcement officers has to use tear gas.
They were able to arrest Maness. He is now charged with first-degree murder.
