UNCW Press Release

ELON, North Carolina – Sophomore guard Naqaiyyah Teague (Malcolm X. Shabazz H.S./Newark, N.J.) scored 20 of her career-high 24 points in the second half as the UNCW women's basketball team earned its first road win of the season with an 86-82 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Elon at Alumni Hall on Thursday evening.

The Seahawks, who ended a 15-game road losing streak with the victory, improve to 9-14 overall and 5-7 in the CAA. Meanwhile, the Phoenix had its two-game win streak snapped with the loss, dropping to 14-9 overall and 7-5 in the circuit.

Teague, who posted her first "double double" of the season in the Seahawks' loss at Delaware, erupted in the second half to lead UNCW to the victory. She made 7 of 11 shots from the floor, including a 2-for-3 effort from long range, after the intermission as the Seahawks overcame a 36-35 deficit at the break.

After falling behind by a 43-39 margin early in the second half, the Seahawks scored 11 of the next 16 points to take a 50-48 advantage with 14:11 left on a three-point field goal by Teague.

Elon regained a one-point advantage on a traditional three-point play by senior guard Sam Coffer (Northern Guilford H.S./Greensboro, N.C.), but the Seahawks put together a 15-4 run, including five points from Teague and senior guard Kelva Atkins (Granville Central H.S./Stem, N.C.), to take a 65-55 lead with 8:32 remaining.

A 6-2 spurt by the Phoenix trimmed the margin to 67-61 with 6:50 left, but sophomore guard Brie Mobley (Winter Haven H.S./Winter Haven, Fla.) ignited a seven-point run by UNCW with five points to give the Seahawks a 74-61 advantage they did not relinquish.

Led by four points by freshman center Malaya Johnson (North Surry H.S./Mount Airy, N.C.) and senior guard Sam Coffer (Northern Guilford H.S./Greensboro, N.C.), the Phoenix sprinted out to a quick 11-2 lead in the first three minutes of the game.

But, the Seahawks answered by scoring 18 of the next 23 points to claim a 20-16 advantage with 9:03 remaining. Sophomore forward Ryan Flowers (Millbrook H.S./Hickory, N.C.) tallied 8 of her 10 first half points during the run.

Johnson contributed a pair of lay-ups to spark a 10-2 spurt by the Phoenix, giving Elon a 28-26 edge with 5:01 remaining. However, the Seahawks had an answer by scoring 9 of the next 13 points, including seven free throws, to reclaim a 31-30 margin with 1:45 left.

The Phoenix outscored UNCW by an 8-4 count in the final 90 seconds to take a slim 36-35 cushion into the intermission.

Teague was one of four UNCW players to score in double figures. Flowers posted her fifth "double double" of the season by scoring 15 points with 12 rebounds while Atkins contributed 20 points.

Mobley posted 13 points and eight rebounds for the Seahawks, who out-rebounded Elon by a 40-27 margin.

Johnson paced the Phoenix with 19 points, making 8 of 10 shots from the field while contributing four rebounds. Sophomore guard Essence Baucom (Phillip O'Berry Academy/Charlotte, N.C.) came off the bench to score 19 points while Coffer, the reigning CAA Player of the Week, added 16 points with five assists and four rebounds.

The Seahawks return home on Sunday afternoon to welcome Northeastern to Trask Coliseum for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off. It will be a re-match of the Jan. 16 meeting, which the Huskies won by a 73-64 count at Cabot Center.
