It's a new year and we're kicking off a new community volunteer recognition project I'm really excited about. It's called the Jefferson Awards. It's a national program that was founded over 40 years ago. But it also has a local component and WECT is proud to be the local media partner.

We are looking for nominations for those special people you know that have a lot of heart and passion for their volunteer efforts. We're looking for people that are doing the volunteer work because they care - not because they are seeking thanks or recognition.

Each month we'll be asking for nominations in a different community service category. We'll choose a winner and share their story with you on our news. And one of our 12 winners will be chosen this time next year to represent this area at the national Jefferson Awards in Washington, DC.

This month we are seeking nominations for volunteers in service to seniors or elder care. If you know someone you really think deserves to be recognized for their service to our older residents, you have until next Thursday, January 15 to let us know about them. We want to celebrate them and tell their story.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn…to let us know about a special volunteer. Just go to wect.com and click on the community tab to fill out our very simple nomination form. You can also find the form in the categories section of the WECT News App.
