Highway Patrol increases number of troopers to patrol on New Year's Eve

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - In New Hanover and Brunswick Counties extra troopers will be hitting the road and patrolling on New Year's Eve.

"We've pretty much got everybody that's available to work tonight,"  said Sgt. Troy Pope, with Highway Patrol. "As long as we can still maintain coverage for day shift."

Sgt. Pope said they will be doubling the number of troopers on the roads in Brunswick and New Hanover Counties, compared to the number that typically patrol on a week night.

"We expect there will be a lot of parties and get-togethers tonight and with that there will be an influx of traffic," Pope said. He explained the extra enforcement will work to keep the roads safe and make sure that no one who has had too much to drink gets behind the wheel.

"We want people to be safe. If they chose not to be safe, we do have troopers out there - we are looking for that type of behavior, it is not to write you a ticket. It's so we can go out and make sure the streets are safe."

Sgt. Pope said he hopes the extra enforcement alone serves as a deterrent.

"We want to be a visible presence and a deterrent for irresponsible behavior...We want people to know we are out there patrolling the roadways."
