(WECT) -

Each year in this country over 10,000 people are killed in accidents caused by drinking and driving. A disproportionate amount of those crashes happen during the New Year's holiday period.

It's not just about what you might do to yourself; if you choose to drink alcohol and get behind the wheel of a car, you are endangering others.

I'm in complete favor of very stringent laws and strong punishment for drunk driving. But that won't solve this problem. Personal responsibility will.

All you have to do is plan your night. If drinking alcohol is part of your entertainment, I guess that is your right. But you need to plan a little. Appoint someone in your group to be in charge and make sure everyone gets home safely.

Our news department covers far too many sad stories about innocent victims of irresponsible people who didn't think, or were not capable of rational thought because they had consumed too much alcohol. You'd think we'd have the cause and effect all figured out by now.

I'm not sure what's on your list of New Year's resolutions, but if you drink alcohol while out and about, then not driving impaired should be at the top of your list.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at yourturn@wect.com.

Loved your take on alcohol but its a minor problem for society when compared to guns. If you don't do a segment on gun control you are just another hypocrite. Wake up and address the bigger problem, guns and gun safety.

There should be NO instances of alcohol related crashes, period. It is a person's right to drink. If you're old enough to drink alcohol then you should do so responsibly. It is NOT a right to drive, it is a privilege, one that some people seem to think they are entitled to. The far reaching devastation of alcohol related crashes, from property destruction to heartbreak, clearly outweighs the selfish act of getting behind the wheel of a vehicle, that has now been turned into a weapon of mass destruction. Don't drink and drive, the life you save may be your own.
