My turn: Al Sharpton seeks out conflict, turmoil and violence

After serving 30 years in the United States Congress, Greensboro native Congressman Howard Coble is retiring. He recently made an observation in a speech on the house floor about Al Sharpton that I found fascinating.

Here are his exact words: “Al Sharpton seeks out matters that involve conflict, turmoil, and violence. I do not recall Al Sharpton appearing at an event where racial harmony was promoted and encouraged.”

I have to agree with Representative Coble on this one. Sharpton is playing odd roles these days, actually appearing as a host for a news program on MSNBC one minute and then involving himself in news stories the next.

If you care at all about the integrity of journalism, that certainly creates some issues that are tough to reconcile. But add to that the fact that Sharpton doesn't appear to be trying to unify anyone to create peace and better understanding. That's certainly not a recipe for advancing civil rights.

There are several past and present civil rights leaders who are known to be honorable and credible that we can look to for leadership and guidance for improving race relations. Al Sharpton probably shouldn't be on that list.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment, or anything else, email me at yourturn@wect.com

I feel that Al Sharpton shows up to “stir the pot” of hate and discord. Once he has gotten the crowd heated up he retreats to another location to continue his mission of racism and hate. He should be charged with inciting a riot and tried as such. As a “Reverend” he does not try to calm things down but only wants to make the issue hotter. If you ever notice him when his picture is taken he never faces the camera he is always looking at something in the far distance. He is a trouble maker and he does not arrive anywhere with the thoughts of solving the problem and sitting down with officials to find a solution. He wants to always in the lime light like he is panacea to the problem.

********

Baptist Al Sharpton's net worth is over 5 million. Al is one of several individuals who couldn't get a real job and have no sympathy for the NAACP. They make their living out of race baiting and cries of racism. Without these charges they would be irrelevant and have to go on welfare. Two others who come to mind are Jessie Jackson who's worth is over 10 million dollars and Reverend Barber whose Baptist organization has raked in over 1.5 million.

********

Sharpton and Jackson feed on cases of alleged racial bias. This is their life, their livelihood . Their actions actually enable and promote and aggravate the hate and distrust they speak lip-service to abhorring. You are exactly on-point! Thank you

********

Thank you for saying publicly what I have thought privately about Al Sharpton.

********

I agree with you.

********

Thank You, its long overdue.

********

I strongly disagree. It was reported days ago he started a movement to stop the division of racial harmony. What are you doing to help stop racial harmony. Only one man can judge and it's definitely not you.Now report that.

********

Well, Blow Me Down........you have just proven that not ALL Media is Liberal, Call Every White Person Racist, and shown Common Sense, which I must admit, you do pretty often!! The Al Sharpton's, Jesse Jackson's are Bottom Feeders making a living over promoting Race Hate. Rev. Martin Luther King was a 'Uniter' deserving praise from all Americans. I don't resonate with terming people, 'African American' or 'Asian American'........you get the drift........one is either An AMERICAN or visiting from another country. If 'labels' were the order of the day, I guess I'm an Irishish American. Not sure where my ancestors hailed from, but I am an American. Do minorities in other countries refer to themselves as 'African German', 'African Australian', 'Vietnamese German', 'Hispanic Armenien'. I hate seeing where our country is headed........finding now it's good to be old (er)!!

Thank you for the Level Head.

********

I agree with you. I also put the Reverend Barber from the NC NAACP in the same boat!

I have never heard Barber talking about how the Black community needs to deal with solving their internal issues like school drop out, single family homes and the need for strong positive male parent and social leadership.

********

Al Sharpton has always been the biggest racist on earth. Always at a march or gathering never apologizing for to families that have had love ones raped or murdered or robbed by men of color. He says police are picking on them all he has to do is watch tv or read the enternet 90 percent of crimes are by men of color.

********

You are absolutely right about this man. Yours was a bold, brave Your Turn segment.

********

I have watched Carolina in the Morning for years but had ALMOST given up on you until this morning. I felt the show had become so biased and leaning toward biased views such as MSNBC and CNN. Thank goodness the truth was spoken this morning. Thank you thank you!!

********

You expressed my exact views on Al Sharpton. I didn't know how to say it, but you stated it well. Thank you!

********

Kudos to you for your comments on Al Sharpton's hidden agenda. He is in such a contrast to Martin Luther King, a man for peace. I totally agree that instead of preaching peace, he thrives on stirring up harmful emotions unnecessarily. I remember when the Duke lacrosse players were unjustly accused of sexual assault, he unjustly tried and convicted them in the media. I don't ever recall him apologizing for damaging these young men's reputations either. As long as he and other activists are part of the problem instead of the solution, civil unrest will continue.

********

Your comments regarding the subject matter were on target! This is an extremely sensitive issue which you handled very well. I am sure you will have some interesting feedback.

I am a black female and in my late 40's. I agree with your comments on Al Sharpton 100%. First, for him to have the title of a "Rev." does not line up with the Jesus I serve. Sharpton is divisive and he wants all the attention. Where is Al Sharpton when a black woman is getting beat and killed by a black man. Where is Al Sharpton when blacks do the same thing to whites that he is accusing the white police officers of doing. What makes one crime greater than the other. He ought to go running for a camera when these two scenarios are playing out, but no he wants to create hostility.

People need to be careful who they follow, especially when they are carrying a religious title because everyone who says "God, God" is not of Jesus Christ. Sharpton has never and will never be a Martin Luther King, Jr. and like all those other blacks and whites who held peaceful protest and professed Jesus Christ in marches of the 50's and 60's.

********

Just a note to Thank you for finally saying something against Al Sharpton. He and Jesse Jackson are setting back race relations years and years. The mainstream media only shows what stirs up people and it doesn't improve relations at all.

********

Up until last night, I enjoyed watching WECT news. By your attacking Al Sharpton (not one of my favorite people) gave insight to your true political affiliation, which in my opinion, should not be so evident in a local news program, unless you're FOX of MSNBC. With all the turmoil going on....the shooting of unarmed young men, which you haven't take a position......you choose to berate Sharpton. Why not take a position on how white police officers have managed to capture 6 white armed criminals who, collectively murdered 42 people (see attached), but managed to kill 6 unarmed blacks who had not killed anyone. Or explain why a white officers would take 40 minutes to talk a white man, with a rifle "down" in Kalamazoo, MI, but only seconds to kill a young black kid in a park in Cleveland, OH?

Al Sharpton is not the problem. Those police officers who have taken it upon themselves to be judge, jury and executioners are a much bigger problem.

By the way, WRAL news isn't so bad, after all. Thanks to you, I love my options at 6:00 PM.

********

Finally!!! Someone has the courage to call him out.

********

You hit the nail on the head with the so called " Reverend Al Sharpton.". Your absolutely right..

I could not agree with you more about your comments. I have been sending email to Al Sharpton at nationalactionnetwork.net for months. I have been telling him how much of a fraud he is. I told him that Martin Luther King, Jr. would be ashamed of him. The same almost goes for Dr. William Barber. Dr. Barber is a camera hog. Just watch him in every segment he is in.

Dr. Barber does not promote the violence that Al Sharpton does. However, he is not a good guy in race relations. He is self-serving.

I came upon a saying from BUDDHA: Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the TRUTH.

I agree with the post that Al Sharpton should be happy that two policemen have been killed. There is nothing like talking from both sides of his mouth. Is he a journalist or an activist? I don't see how he can be both. What kind of network would allow that? If NBC is that network, then I need a new network.

********

I wholeheartedly agree with you. We always see him standing on the podium in plain sight, is always negative and racist, and I think that is his objective. I think he is an agitator of the worst kind. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.

********

We all have a right to vent our comments, however our comments should be truthful and factual. It is crucial that as news reporters and journalist we do not practice letting our person bias cause us to become people that produce half truths or preach against the very thing we practice and make our living with..

I have been watching WECT TV News 6 for 30 years and have seen your reporters report about bad things happening to people in Wilmington, New Hanover County, the surrounding counties and the nation and the world for the entire period. Your news reports rush to get the scoop or shall I say breaking news on every disaster within 80 to 100 miles of Wilmington. Yet you and one of the most racist Republican Congress can agree that you need to attack the character of one black faced preacher who has been given a equal chance to tell the truth as the last great stand for the Confederacy.

This congressman has been on the public payroll since 1885 as a sworn representative of the people in the 6th district of North Carolina. I am willing to wager you that he cannot count 25 Black, Hispanic, or Asian North Carolinian he has helped or represented in anything for 30 years, yet during his retirement comments, it was important to him to show his hatred for another human by attacking a black preacher who has the program and the nerve to point out that Jim Crow has never left America, and the hanging of blacks have not stopped nor the outright murdering of Blacks, Hispanics, and Asians are still supported by 33 percent of those who hide behind a flag and a badge. What is the Tea Party and the Republican hate machine? Now we have Fair and Balance News by Fox Cable who have stoked hatred, bigotry, and unfair treatment for over 30 years for low income Americans and you never said a word about them. Why? Most democrats in North Carolina, Independents and students in North Carolina and the Nation have been denied their right to vote and have been draw out of election district where a democrat can win under any circumstance.

Mr. McNair, I believe Jesus Christ said it best for us all in Matthew 7:3 And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother. Let me remove the speck from your eye; and look, a plank is in your eye. Maybe you and Congressman Howard Coble do not see Rev Sharpton as your brother. God does. We all come from Adam and Eve, by the way, DNA and the Human Geno has been trace by to the black Adam and Eve as the parents of mankind.
