WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

UNC Wilmington's trustee chair said Friday that his board supports the interim chancellor's decision to cut four sports programs.

Monday the school announced it would eliminate four sports programs: Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field, Women's Indoor Track and Field, and Men's Cross Country. The cuts take effect in the 2015-2016 academic year.

In a letter to trustees, parents of track and field athletes questioned Interim Chancellor William Sederberg's decision to cut the programs rather than waiting for his successor to take the helm next year.

“We don't want to sit still for a year,” said Board of Trustees Chair Michael Shivar. “We want to move forward, and I'm not speaking of just athletics. I'm speaking overall. We don't want a one-year holding pattern while we have a selection of a new chancellor. We need to continue to make progress.”

Shivar said Sederberg consulted with the trustees prior to the announcement.

“Unfortunately it's a financial decision,” Shivar said. “If we could raise a lot more money…maybe that could be continued. But I don't, at this point, see that.”

Despite the recommendations of a campus committee, Chancellor Gary Miller announced in May 2013 that he would not cut any sports. But Shivar noted that the former chancellor said the university would continue to keep a close eye on the programs.

“It wasn't without warning,” Shivar said of this week's announcement. “It wasn't like everything's just fine and all of a sudden now it's not.”
