PENDER COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

After seeing a story on WECT News about a controversial atheist billboard asking people to "skip church," business owner David Johnson decided it was time remind people what Christmas was all about.

Johnson is the owner of Johnson Nursery in Willard, NC. He explained that during a company meeting his team decided they needed to put up their own billboard announcing "Merry Christmas and underline Christ in Christmas."

"We hear holiday this and season that, but rarely Christmas," said Johnson about their decision for making their own billboard.

This is the message that got his company and many others around the country fired up. "Dear Santa, All I want for Christmas is to skip church! I'm too old for fairy tales."

"Before this company meeting was over many started handing me $10 and $20 bills," Johnson said.

As a result the company collected enough money to create their billboard and get it in the air on Interstate 40 near mile marker 393.
