Witness account reveals he saw 'person of interest' set van on fire

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WECT) - Court documents describe witness accounts of the "person of interest" in the Carolina Beach fire investigation.

According to a police affidavit, Marshall Doran was captured on video surveillance stealing a women's purse from The Dive Bar in Carolina Beach.

Court documents reveal around 3:30 a.m. a burglary happened at a home on Carolina Beach Avenue South. A witness describes confronting a male who was trying to break in his home through an ocean side window. Doran was later charged with burglary at that address.

Also in the affidavit, another witness Vick Gore, testified he saw a male inside a maroon van. Gore says he saw smoke coming from the van and asked the male inside if it was his car. The male ran away.

The document says, "Gore later gave a 95 percent positive ID that Doran was the individual he saw inside the van - lighting the second fire."

In a search warrant, police ask to search for anything at Doran's home "used in the process of igniting a fire." Investigators seized several iPads, hard drives and Macbooks from Doran's home, considered possible evidence of a crime.
