Founder of Island Montessori School resigns position

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - One of the founders of Island Montessori School has resigned her position with the charter school.

Jennifer Friend confirmed that she stepped down for personal reasons Monday night in an email to students and staff.

Friend explained her vision for the Montessori education as the school began accepting applications in 2013.

"There aren't many school choices in our area," Jennifer Friend said in a 2013 interview. "All of the elementary schools in this part of New Hanover County are over capacity - some by 100 students. So, I feel like not only are we going to be able to offer a unique curriculum to families in our area but we're going to be able to alleviate some of that over capacity."

The school serves students from kindergarten to 6th grade in two locations.

Dr. Maria Montessori is credited with the Montessori-style education, which specializes in individualized education in multi-age classes and the use of hands on learning.
