SAVANNAH, GA (WECT) - A woman from the Cape Fear region won the 4th Annual Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in Savannah, GA on Saturday.

Tara Martine, of Wilmington, NC was the first female to cross the finish line. Martine said she finished with an official time of 2:59:02.

Martine said she didn't do as well in her last race, and  was was determined to break a three hour barrier. She, of course, accomplished that goal by finishing just under three hours.

Martine said she was not expecting to win, but at mile 22 she took the lead and held on for victory.

“I saw the woman ahead of me around 15 miles and she looked really strong,” said Martine. “I thought there is no way I am going to catch up to her, so I am going to run my race and try and get my sub three. Around mile 22 I caught up to her and she said, ‘Congratulations! You're running strong - go for it!' and I was able to hold on to the end.”

More than 17,000 runners participated in the grueling 26.2-mile race.25-year-old Nathan Hilton of Flagstaff, Arizona, won the men's division. He finished with an official time of 2:21:31. The previous record was set in 2011.
