WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Radiation is one of the most common treatments, but it can damage organs like the heart and lungs.
Now there is a a new treatment that shields the rest of the body from radiation.
It works by inserting a small catheter with flexible tail-like structures into the breast by a surgeon. Then, a radioactive "seed" is inserted to kill any remaining breast cancer cells. Similar techniques are used to treat men diagnosed with prostate cancer.
This form of radiation is best for women over 50 with very small tumors not involving lymph nodes.
