WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - The Azalea Festival has unveiled its official 2015 artwork.

Wilmington artist Clyde Edgerton created the oil painting of a white azalea.

Edgerton lives in Wilmington and is a writing professor at UNCW. He took up oil painting after discovering the work of local architect and artist Chip Hemingway.

His winning artwork was unveiled Thursday, Oct. 16, which also kicked off the Azalea Festival Children's Art contest.

It's open to elementary and middle school children in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties. Participants can submit an illustration of their favorite festival tradition.

First place winners receive an invitation to the 2015 Governor's press conference in Raleigh to present their artwork. They can also ride in the 2015 Azalea Festival parade and other prizes.

The deadline is January 16, 2015. Winners will be notified in February. For a list of prizes and to download an entry application, click here: http://bit.ly/1vCSAo9
