WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Guillermo Delgado's golden goal with 57 seconds remaining in the second overtime lifted #23 Delaware to a 1-0 win over #22 UNCW in Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer action on Saturday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
The Blue Hens snapped the Seahawks' six-game winning streak and improved their record to 8-3 and 1-0 in the CAA. The Seahawks dropped to 8-2-1 and 1-1 in the league.
On the winning goal, Delgado, who now has a league-leading eight goals, was able to split a pair of UNCW defenders to a cleared ball and broke in on UNCW goalkeeper Sean Melvin one-on-one. Delgado took a touch to settle the ball and then fired a low liner into the right side of the goal to end the game.
UNCW held an 18-8 advantage in shots, while Delaware managed just two shots on goal. Joe Dipre and Ben Asante both hit the crossbar though.
Jamie Dell led UNCW with six shots on goal and created several scoring chances. His best chance was in the 15th minute when he tried to slide a shot in from a tough angle on the left side only to see it cleared by a Blue Hen defender off the goal line.
UD goalkeeper Borja Barbero made five saves in recording the shutout.
UP NEXT: UNCW hosts the College of Charleston on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
NOTES: The loss was the first for the Seahawks against a nationally-ranked opponent, falling to 4-1 … It was the first time the Seahawks were shutout this season … UNCW is 3-1-1 in overtime games … The Blue Hens moved to 4-9 all-time against UNCW and have won four the last five meetings between the two programs.
