UNCW Press Release:

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW freshman defender Brayden Smith made the most of his first career start as he assisted on the game-winning goal in UNCW's 2-1 win over nationally ranked South Carolina last week.

"Brayden played with a maturity beyond his years in his first full collegiate start against South Carolina," said UNCW head coach Aidan Heaney. "He showed how well he reads the game and anticipates situations, and is also very composed in possession. He also contributed to a goal, so pleased for him and the impact he had for our team."

Smith made his first career starts against the Gamecocks and just his second career appearance and responded with a well-rounded game. In addition to assisting on the game-winner, Smith also helped the UNCW defense limit USC to just five shots and one corner kick on the night.

On the game-winner, Smith corralled a failed clear by USC on a corner kick. He fired a shot that was blocked and deflected to Jamie Dell, who drilled his second game-winner of the season and the fifth of his career.

The Seahawks trailed early, 1-0, in the ninth minute before shutting down the Gamecocks the rest of the way. It was UNCW's first win against USC since the early 1980's.

UNCW continues its daunting road stretch on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. start against undefeated and 25th-ranked Campbell. The game will be streamed and accessible through UNCWsports.com.
