Shoplifting suspects lead police on wild chase through Brunswick Co.

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

Two shoplifting suspects ended up in the hospital after crashing their vehicle during a wild police chase through Brunswick County Monday afternoon.

According to officials, Antonio Michael Rago of Conway, SC and Elizabeth Ashley Ventiquattro of Conway,SC were suspected of stealing merchandise at the Southport Walmart.

Southport Police responded and the suspects fled in their SUV, nearly running over officers as they escaped, officials say.

Authorities chased the suspects through Boiling Spring Lakes, all the way to the intersection of Old Ocean Drive and Highway 17. 

The chase ended when the suspects crashed into a parked vehicle.

Rago and Ventiquattro were transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for treatment. Their conditions aren't known at this time. Police plan to arrest the pair after they're released from NHRMC.

Police also discovered heroin and drug paraphernalia inside their vehicle. 

Rago was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, eluding arrest, careless and reckless driving, felony larceny, possession of heroin, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Ventiquattro was charged with financial card theft, larceny, possession of heroin and possession of stolen goods.

Officials say Rago and Ventiquattro may also be wanted in connection to the theft a woman's purse on Saturday.
