On a cool fall morning the Endless Summer casts off from a marina near Southport.
Captain Jim Carey and his wife Barbara, take Elizabeth on board, teaching her an abbreviated course on sailing.
They head out into the waters where the Intracoastal Waterway and Cape Fear River meet. Elizabeth takes the helm while the Carey's navigate. They let her hoist the main sail, the most tiring task of the day.
The sloop reaches speeds of nearly seven knots, giving Elizabeth quite and experience for her first sailing experience.
