WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -
UNCW's Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) is one of 50 winners of a $50,000 grant awarded by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
The first ever Growth Accelerator Fund national competition was very competitive and grants were awarded to fewer than 1 percent of the 800 applications.
UNCW's CIE is one of only three recipients in North Carolina.
"We are very proud of this recognition and validation of a year of really hard work to implement the infrastructure in the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the Wilmington region," said CIE Executive Director Jim Roberts.
CIE, in partnership with AT&T, created the Coastal Open Resource App Lab (CORAL). The lab is equipped with a variety of mobile devices for testing developmental web-based applications on multiple platforms. It is one of only two open device labs in North Carolina.
The grant will help UNCW's CIE move forward with the next stage of its plans to support startups in Southeastern North Carolina.
