HAMLET, NC (WECT) -

As part of WECT's 60th Anniversary we are taking a look back at a fatal fire that devastated the town of Hamlet, NC.

The fire tore through the Imperial Food Products chicken processing plant in the early morning of September 3, 1991. As workers tried to exit the building they found them locked, trapping them inside.

25 people died as a result of the fire and 55 more were injured. 

A short documentary was written and produced by Robert Cotter and Maureen Costello and released in 1994. Cotter and Costello's film documents the plight of the Imperial Food workers and what effect this tragic event has had in their lives.
