CFCC adds gender neutral restrooms to campuses

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

Cape Fear Community College has added a dozen new gender neutral restrooms to its campuses.

According to CFCC Director of Marketing and Public Relations, David Hardin, the college added the bathrooms this year to meet required regulations.

"We added these facilities to make sure we're complying with federal regulations so we're not discriminating with people that have gender identities either male or female," explained Hardin.

Hardin said the bathrooms can be used by both men and women, though the college still has several traditional restrooms designed only for men and only for women.

Hardin said safety is not expected to be a concern for students or faculty looking to use the gender neutral restrooms.

"These facilities that have been designated are smaller restrooms and they have a lock on the inside so it's private and secure," Hardin said.

What do you think about the new restrooms? Hear what some students have to say tonight on WECT News at 5:30.
