WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) -

The North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission is reminding dove hunters to practice gun safety throughout the season.

Officer Cody Walker of the Wildlife Resource Commission gave several tips for gun safety including ear and eye protection.

He also said to avoid shooting the low flying doves because if a hunter is in a crowded area, they could end up shooting another hunter.

It is also important to be aware of the zone of fire rule. Hunters should not shoot outside of their 45 degree angle of their eye range.

One of the most important rules is to always point the gun at the sky or ground.

The dove hunting season started September 1 and goes through October 11 and again from November 27 through January 15. The daily bag rate for doves is 15 and possession rate is 45.
