Rain compounds downtown traffic issues, delays Vandy kickoff

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Music and football fans flooded downtown Nashville on Thursday but heavy rain compounded Thursday evening's traffic issues.

An hour to show time and music blared from the Live on the Green stage. The only thing that was needed were fans.

"This town loves its teams, loves their music, and you can't get much better than here at Public Square," Karen Shayne said.

The rain turned Live on the Green from a free concert to a massive slip-and-slide.

"We weren't participating," Emily Dunn said. "We watched everyone else do it."

Concert organizers expected some 15,000 fans Thursday, but the rain sent many home or kept others from coming.

Those who weathered the storms got their money's worth.

Thousands more were expected for the Titans' final preseason game at LP Field, as well as Vanderbilt's football season opener against Temple.

Kickoff for Vanderbilt's game was delayed from 8:15 p.m. to just before 10 p.m. due to lightning in the area.

The Titans' game against the Vikings began on time, unaffected by rain moving through downtown.
