Driver charged after tractor trailer crashed into overpass at Regency Square Mall

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

A tractor trailer was stuck under an overpass near the Regency Square Mall on Thursday morning.

The accident happened around 10:12 a.m. at the Quioccasin Road overpass near the Macy's side of the mall. The bridge has been inspected and it was not damaged.

The maximum height for the bridge is 11 1/2 feet.  The driver told NBC12 off camera that his GPS took him that route and he saw the signs, but it didn't register.  Part of Quioccasin Road had to be closed off while crews tried to free the big rig.

"Pay attention!" says Steve Doles who works near by.  "It's obviously too low, and you're too high. so just pay attention, I just hope he wasn't on the phone like a lot of people are doing you know?"

The truck has been removed from under the bridge. The driver has been charged with reckless driving and failure to obey a highway sign.  According to Henrico's Public Works, the last time a truck was stuck underneath this overpass was more than two years ago.
