School officials have safety and security are top of mind as students head back to the classroom.
After the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary, New Hanover County Sheriff Ed McMahon has made it his mission to improve safety at schools. This year the schools will have the most resource officers the system has ever had.
Nearly three dozen officers will be coming from the sheriff's office; four from the Wilmington Police Department; and there will be one from Carolina Beach.
In all, there will be 39 school resource officers inside New Hanover County schools in case of an emergency.
While that's the most they've ever had, it's still not enough to cover every single school. Instead, the officers will move around so that if there is an issue at a school without an SRO, there is one nearby that can be there almost immediately.
