SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -
The Springfield Police Department has identified the victim of last week's fatal shooting that occurred at the drive-thru window of a McDonald's restaurant on Allen Street in the city's Sixteen Acres neighborhood.
Authorities announced Monday that the victim of the shooting early Friday was 25-year-old Keith Gendreau of Agawam, according to Springfield Police Sgt. John Delaney.
Gendreau was driving a 2012 Nissan Frontier through the drive-thru lane about 2 a.m. when a man driving another car pulled up alongside his vehicle and opened fire, Delaney said.
Gendreau then attempted to flee, but crashed into a pole after driving a short distance. A 35-year-old East Longmeadow man who was riding with Gendreau told first responders that he had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, Delaney said.
Gendreau was rushed to Baystate Medical Center by ambulance. He was pronounced dead at 2:40 a.m., Delaney said.
"Detectives have been working on this case around the clock and following leads," Delaney said, adding that he was unaware of any motive for the crime.
The suspect could only be described as a Hispanic male, according to Delaney.
The death is the city's 10th homicide of the year.
If anyone has any information regarding the homicide, they are asked to call the Springfield Police Department Detective Bureau at 413-787-6355 or 'Text-a-Tip.'
