FAIR BLUFF, NC (WECT) -
Investigators say they may never know the exact cause of the fire that killed an elderly woman near Fair Bluff Sunday night.
Darcus Ann Bullard, 75, died in the fire that consumed her home on Irvin Enzor Road, less than a mile from the South Carolina line.
Someone called 911 around 11:15 p.m. after seeing flames shooting from the roof of the cinderblock house where Bullard lived alone.
Columbus County Fire Marshal Scott Merritt said Bullard was found about six feet from a door. He says she may have been overcome with smoke while trying to rescue her cat.
The fire report will list the cause of the blaze as "undetermined," although investigators ruled out the possibility of foul play, according to Merritt. He said the fire may have been sparked by cigarettes.
Bullard's body was taken to Raleigh for an autopsy. William Hannah, Columbus County's assistant coroner, said he had not received the results as of Monday.
