Shots fired on Spring street: One suspect arrested, Investigation continues

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Officials with the Charleston Police Department are investigating an incident where shots were fired outside of a restaurant on Spring street Friday night.

Charleston Police officials say officers were at the McDonalds at 230 Spring Street around 10:00 p.m. Friday in reference to a crowd at the location following the end of Sertoma.

The manager of the restaurant had asked the officers to help break up the crowd, according to officials. While in the process of dispersing the crowd, shots were fired form the parking lot of the Taco Bell at 220 Spring street towards the Mcdonalds.

Officials say a shot struck the McDonalds within a few feet of the officers. Investigators are still working to determine if someone was shooting at the officers. No arrests have been made in this incident.

A witness told police he saw a male fire a weapon in the parking lot of Taco Bell and then run towards Hagood Avenue. Witnesses say the male was wearing a black collared shirt.

Officers in the area were provided with the suspect's description. Officials say one of the officers saw a male matching this description on Ashton Street and a foot pursuit ensued. The officer lost sight of the male within the 30 block of Ashton Street, according to officials.

A K-9 assisted in the search where the suspect was last seen. Officials say a handgun was found in the rear of an Ashton Street residence.

Officials say a K-9 was also used to search the Taco Bell parking where he found a handgun underneath shrubbery. Officers also found a shell casing near the rear driver side tire of a car in the lot.

Officials say the officers continued searching the vehicle and found a handgun on the front passenger floor board. They also found a handgun in a pocket behind the front passenger seat.

A few minutes later, officials say a group of teens approached the officers and a 16-year-old male said he was there to get the vehicle. According to officials, the teenager had the keys to the vehicle and admitted to driving it earlier.

The 16-year-old male is charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a handgun. He is being held in the Juvenile Detention Center.

The investigation is ongoing.
