BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

The Department of Motor Vehicles has partially fixed a software glitch that led to hundreds of people being charged for car taxes they didn't actually owe.

Many customers in Brunswick County were charged for Bald Head Island Car taxes, even though they didn't live there. Those customers were told they would have to apply for a refund - which could take months to process.

In all, the Brunswick County Tax Office collected about $130,000 from people who were overcharged or incorrectly charged.

Tax officials tell us about half of that money has now been refunded to customers or reapplied to the correct tax jurisdiction. The rest of the money is still being processed.
